Gleniffer Breas, Paisley

From Robertson Park walk on grassy path to Gleniffer Burn. Head downhill on road and path to a waterfall and then a short climb to Tannahill Walkway. Return on rough paths over open ground to the start.

Terrain: Paths, road and moorland muddy in places.

Distance: 10 km, duration 4 hrs, total ascent 180m to max ht. 170m.

Start point: Robertson Park car park in Gleniffer Braes Country Park, Paisley.

Ben Donich

An easy pace walk from the carpark to the summit and return by the same route.

Terrain: Good paths with a little, easy scrambling.

Distance: 7˝ km, duration 5 hrs, total ascent 720 m to max. ht. 847 m.

Start point: Car park on south side of B828 about 400m from Rest and be Thankful.

Glen Finlas Horse Shoe

Circuit of the hills above Glen Finlas reservoir.

Terrain: Moderate ascents/descents on open grassy slopes with faint hill paths on higher ground. Short distance on tarmac roads. Shantron Muir towards Balcnock can be wet and some peat hags to negotiate on Creachan Hill.

Distance: 16 km, duration 7 hrs, total ascent 790m to max ht. 693m .

Start point: Lay-by on south side of A817 close to junction with A82.

Lanark to Crossford via Cartland Craigs (Photo 1182)

We catch the 10:59 bus from Crossford to Lanark and then walk along a minor road for 1.5km before reaching Cleghorn Glen. We then follow the Mouse Water to its junction with the Clyde before following the Clyde Walkway back to Crossford.

Terrain: Mostly reasonable, if muddy, paths alongside rivers but also 2.8 km on roads.

Distance: 12˝ km, duration 5 hrs, total ascent 180m to max ht. 184m .

Start point: Public car park, off Smugglers Brig Road, behind the Village Hall in Crossford, on left (east) of A72, 300 yards south of bridge over River Nethan.
THE WALK REQUIRES A BUS FARE FROM CROSSFORD TO LANARK.
Walkers are advised to “use the facilities” at Bothwell Service Station as there are no public toilets at Crossford.

It is emphasised that ‘A’ grade walks are strenuous and should only be attempted by those with high standards of fitness and stamina and who are also properly equipped and clothed for the conditions.

Leaders will quite properly turn away those who do not meet these standards as they could create difficulties or danger for other members of the group.

Beinn Chabhair

Climb alongside Beinglas waterfall and following Ben Glas Burn to Lochan Beinn Chabhair. From there, a steady ascent leads up to and along a fine ridge path which twists and turns as it negotiates a series of humps and knolls on its climb to the summit. Given good conditions, there are some magnificent views to be had at all points along the ridge.

Terrain: Initially steep ascent on rocky path followed by gradual ascent, boggy in places, to Lochan Beinn Chabhair. From there, ascend to ridgeline to pick up a good defined path which ascends over a series of humps and knolls to the summit.

Distance: 13 km, duration 7 hrs, total ascent 930 m to max. ht. 933 m.

Loch Ard Forest Walk

An easy walk entirely on forest tracks around Lime Hill and partly alongside pipeline and aqueducts.

Terrain: Forest tracks.

Distance: 12 km, duration 5 hrs, total ascent negligible to max. ht. 120 m.

Start point: Car park near Drymen Road Cottage on Drymen to Gartmore road.

Ben Inverveigh & Meall Tairbh

Initially on West Highland Way then grass track to Mam Carraigh and along ridgeline to Ben Inverveigh. Descend to hummocky col, skirting a lochan. After climbing steeply to summit of Meall Tairbh, return north eastwards following ridgeline and then descend directly by Allt Oran to the hotel.

Terrain: Hill tracks & open moorland.

Distance: 12 km, duration 6 hrs, total ascent 650 m to max. ht. 665 m.

Duncolm from Queens View via the Whangie (Photo 1183)(1184)

From Queen’s View car park, follow hill path to the Whangie and onwards to Burncrooks Reservoir. Take the track round the north and west of the reservoir, cross the dam and join a moorland path to Lily Loch and Duncolm. Return by similar route but take the path round the south and east of the reservoir. (C+ walk will be available by completing a circuit of Burncrooks Reservoir, omitting the leg to Lily Loch and Duncolm.).

Terrain: Muddy hill paths with a few boggy bits on moorland paths. Excellent path round Burncrooks Reservoir. Most ascents are gradual except for very steep final ascent up Duncolm summit.

Distance: 16(12) km, duration 6(4˝) hrs, total ascent 520(300) m to max. ht. 401(300) m.
