It is emphasised that ‘A’ grade walks are strenuous and should only be attempted by those with high standards of fitness and stamina and who are also properly equipped and clothed for the conditions.

Leaders will quite properly turn away those who do not meet these standards as they could create difficulties or danger for other members of the group.

Ben Vane

From car park at Inveruglas follow Loch Sloy road to foot of south east ridge. Follow steep track to summit, returning by same route.

Terrain: Good track at first, rough moorland thereafter.

Distance: 11 km, duration 6 hrs, total ascent 927m to max. ht 915m.

Start point: Inveruglas loch side car park.
Distance / Time from Helensburgh: 25 miles / 45 mins.

A

Cruach Ardrain

A fine walk from the lower reaches of Coire Earb climbing up to Grey Heights and along the broad but rocky ridge to Meall Dhamh. From here, a narrow path then contours around the western slopes of Cruach Ardrain before finally turning and climbing steeply towards the impressive summit area. The return is via the reverse route - although, weather and group permitting, we may consider a return via Stob Garbh.

Terrain: Initially good track before ascent on deep grassy slopes to ridgeline. Rocky ridge path along ridge and on ascent to summit.

Distance: 14 km, duration 7 hrs, total ascent 1000m to max. ht 1046m.

Start point: Large (Keilator) lay by on east side of A82 – 1.5 mile south of Crianlarich.

Killearn Pipeline Path (Photo 1185)(1186)(1187)

Through Killearn to join the pipe track to the distillery. Then onto the West Highland Way towards Gartness, then minor road back to start.

Terrain: Old pipe track, small section of field, disused railway track and minor roads.

Distance: 13 km, duration 4½ hrs, total ascent 100m to max. ht. 120m.

Start point: Public car park or roadside parking in Killearn at road junction.
Distance / Time from Helensburgh: 20 miles / 35mins.

Cairnsmore of Carsphairn

From bridge, farm track to start east up Willieanna, Dunool, Black Shoulder, to the 797m top , then south west to pick up main track back out.

Terrain: Track, open hill and good track out.

Distance: 12 km, duration 6 hrs, total ascent 800m to max ht. 797m.

Start point: Park at right hand side of A713, immediately east of bridge at Green Well of Scotland. SATNAV 55.22247°N, 4.26966°W If you reach Carsphairn, you’ve gone too far and turn back.
Distance / Time from Helensburgh: 86 miles via M8, M77, A77, A713/ 2hr .

Creag an Tuirc, Kirkton Glen (Photo 1188)(1189)(1190)

Creag an Tuirc is a steep short climb to the summit and then a circular undulating walk around Kirkton Glen.

Terrain: Hill path and forestry track. Can be muddy in places.

Distance: 11 km, duration 4 hrs, total ascent 505m to max ht. 407m.

Start point: Car park at Balquhidder church.
Distance / Time from Helensburgh: 34 miles / 1hr 30mins.

Ptarmigan and Cruinn a’Bheinn

West Highland Way track to Ardess and hill path over Ptarmigan towards Ben Lomond. Leave path where it turns east (to top of Ben Lomond) and continue in northerly direction to Cruinn a’Bheinn. Descend north west and west to steep descent beside Cailness burn and West Highland Way track back to Rowardennan.

Terrain: Good hill path on Ptarmigan. Trackless open hill beyond, over rough grass and with steep ascents and descents on Cruinn a’Bheinn and down to Loch Lomond side. Good path from Cailness to Rowardennan.

Distance: 20 km, duration 9 hrs, total ascent 1250m, to max ht. 750m.

Start point: Rowardennan car park (Pay and display. Parking charge applicable).
